Rake it Up

I recently read an article about trees networking in the forest through their root systems and found it fascinating. It was strictly scientific and yet it seemed to state something wonderful and inspiring. To me it seemed obvious that the smaller saplings would want to stay connected to the Mother tree. If trees communicate with each other, I assume the gorgeous display during autumn is their way of communicating with us!

Rake it Up
Eve Gaal

Letters of hope,
Cling to the branch,
A type of hanging rope
Waiting for the wind
To swirl the colors in front of your face
Desperately calling for your attention
As you drive through town in a race.

Parking,
Laughing,
Texting,
Dining,
Shopping,
Touring,
Dancing,
Picking up the kids,
Running errands,
The bank,
The cleaners,
The vet.

There’s a chill in the air,
You look in the rear-view mirror
Outraged at messy hair,
The messages keep falling
Piling on your windshield,
The network keeps calling.

Zooming,
Darting,
Dashing,
Jumping,
Bundling,
Packaging,
Shipping-
Avoid drops,
Watch for puddles,
Find your umbrella,
Wear a jacket--
Don't get wet.

Do you think trees communicate?

  1. I do think they are much more relaxed than we are!

  2. A lovely poem, Eve. I remember watching a documentary about the communication of plantlife.

  3. I like the notion I read somewhere, that trees have leaves that change and die off, branches which sway with nature. But the true test of loyalty are in the roots, which keep the tree rooted.

Trees and nature make the best metaphors for poetry. Thanks for sharing!

  4. Yup. They're telling us hang in there. They do.

  5. Oh, Eve, this is wonderful! I have always believed plants have more going on than we'll ever really know.

  6. Wonderful post and lovely poem.
I believe that all plants communicate especially trees.
I wrote a post early in my blogging life the way the Paloverde Tree is a nurse plant to the Saguaro. It covers the young plant with shade in the summer and added warmth in winter keeping it safe. Anywhere from 50 to 100 years later the Paloverde will die off when the Saguaro is strong enough to live.

    cheers, parsnip

  8. I really believe that trees communicate. I saw a show once about how these trees...I forget what kind they were...some kind of pine I think....but the seedling was being fed by the mother through the root system. There were all kinds of plants and other trees growing around the mother tree, but she only fed her own seedlings. It was very interesting. Also, trees send out chemical signals to various insects to come if they are facing an infestation...and...the thing I found most interesting was, that smell we all love so much...the smell of fresh mowed grass...is a chemical scream that the grass sends out to signify that it's under attack!
Love the poem too Eve! Thanks for a thought provoking post!

  9. Absolutely! I’m convinced that all plants communicate. Have you ever hugged a tree? I have, and I swear those trees would communicate with me if they could. I read somewhere that when you cut a flower or lop of a twig the plant screams, it’s worried me ever since hence my garden is out of control.
(well, that’s my excuse, and I’m sticking to it!)
    Wonderful post and lovely poem.
