Shoes Filled With Stories

Have you ever thought about the shoes lined up at a thrift store and wondered where they've been? A road less traveled, perhaps because they didn't fit correctly? Were the people who wore them nice? Do scuffs on the soles mean the wearers of those shoes were busy?  Maybe you speculated about some glitzy, slightly worn, gold-leather sandals, imagining the woman who wore them and whether they enjoyed lots of hugs and kisses while wearing them? Did she kick them off? Did someone gently unbuckle the straps and throw them next to the bed? Maybe they danced all night doing the Tango. ... Read my story, Circles and Tangos to share in my nostalgic reminiscing.

Another Left Shoe is about-- well exactly that--but my interpretation and memoir translated the title to mean shoes that stayed behind and are thus, left to those of us who might use them again. This anthology has many stories by other writers including Timothy Hurley, Nancy Clark Townsend and Laura Rittenhouse. The collection was edited and compiled by Betsy A. Riley. 3. I often think this about antiques - especially furniture - and once wrote a story about a kitchen table we had that was previously owned by a family with small children who left love marks all over it. I also wrote a story about a pair of shoes I'd owned for many, many years that took me all across Europe and picked up remnants from Pompeii to Shakespeare's Globe Theatre. :)

  5. I do the same thing at thrift shops. I wonder about old coats and where they've been!

  6. Hey Eve,

What a great way of thinking about shoes. This book seems like a shoe thing. I like a book with a bit of sole and I shall take a look as I gingerly stumble over there to check it out in my brand new used stilettos :)

  7. What an interesting literary conceit! That is a loamy soil for stories. I'm hooked and joining your blog.

  8. Terry purchased a pair of thrift store shoes a couple of weeks ago, he said they were such a bargain he had to have them. He didn’t think they were such a bargain when the soles shredded into little tiny pieces as he drove the car! I’m not sure where those shoes came from, but I can tell you one thing, they won’t be going anywhere else!
Another left shoe sounds intriguing thanks for telling us about it.
Just back from my holiday and catching up with my favourite blogs. Barbara

  9. This is poetry.

As a student of poetry, I have started to be aware of how I've been seeing things all my life - tangible things with an intangible life, and shoes are loaded with metaphors for so many walks we've taken! I thank you kindly for this recommendation AND for coming to visit, leaving such a lovely comment! Enjoy the lushness of reading and writing! Anita
