At Dusk-The Puppy Transformation

I’ve been calling our live-in rescue, Petunia Butt-Cakes, because she doesn’t like home remodeling. There are contractors setting tile upstairs, which inspires unprovoked barking tantrums. She refuses to learn the outside from the inside, hangs off of puppy pads to do her business, or goes for the larger pads-aka-rugs. She also forages for sticks in the yard, chews on them, which in turn gives her constipation, and that annoying itch under the tail.

Of course, she’s teething, chewing and destroying everything she can, even digging up plants, and turning over lamps. Her numerous toys don’t excite her as much as any form of trouble. You should see what she did with my yarn. And, she shouldn’t have separation anxiety, because we are here, babysitting, and trying to train this 13lbs of terror, with treats, all day long. I turn my back and she’s standing on the dinner table. Still, she doesn’t believe she’s not the Alpha dog. Somehow, she has determined that she can do as she pleases, and it’s none of our business.

Her dad has threatened to send her back to the rescue; even offered to sell her in front of Walmart. I think he was joking, but the scars on his hands just healed. We bought books on training puppies but those people/writers/doctors or whatever they call themselves, are crazy. One book, that ended up in the thrift-store box, suggests a choke-hold leash. Another famous dog guru said to use electrical shock collars. How are famous veterinarian’s able to offer such horrid advice?  In fact, I’m astounded, but I don’t want to dwell on it.

I’m hoping when the floor is finished, things will settle down a bit. Until then, I’m investing in odor eliminators and rolling up the rugs. Someday, I want to write about her sweetness. It happens after dusk. After the workers are gone. After running us ragged, after we threw the ball a hundred times, after the zoomies in the yard, after she’s too pooped to bark anymore, she finally, runs out of energy and wants to snuggle-up while we watch television. Adorable.

Beyond the Story with Author Sandra Jackson

 Gorgeous Giulia

I have a question for some of my writer friends. Have you ever come across a character who was annoying and obnoxious from the moment they popped into your head?

Let me introduce you to gorgeous but naughty Giulia. This is a character I don’t know much about but she sure knew how to start trouble in my novel. When author Sandra Jackson asked to interview one of my characters, I thought it would be hilarious to find out more about Giulia.

The best part of the interview is that Sandra seamlessly was able to read between the lines of my vague responses. Giulia is Juan’s sweetheart, but her heart is all over the place, as you'll see in this funny and entertaining interview.

Top 10 Canine Truths Proving It's the Heart and Not the Brains

Yesterday I saw another one of those videos where the dog helps around the house and seems to be able to do everything. Of course, most of these short films are created to make us laugh, but this particular clip was about a service dog that held the shopping basket and ran up and down aisles in a supermarket. This brainy dog could do it all. Made me think of my little mutts, who can’t do anything, except shed hair, make a mess and bark. So the more I thought about it, the more I realized how important they are and all the various things they do to make me happy.

1.       Good Security
No one had better come within twenty-five feet of our property, even though the houses in our neighborhood are standing about twenty feet apart.

2.       Mail Alert System
It’s like a sophisticated App you can download for your Smartphone. Want to know when the mail arrives? Ask Pinky and Fiona because they will let you know! In fact, they will let the entire neighborhood know.
3.       Comfort
If I’m tired or sick, they like to snuggle. If I’m angry, they’re on my side. If I’m crying, they will lick my tears away. This alone is worth the price of admission.

4.       Laughter
I love comedies, variety shows and most comedians. I even have a good friend who does stand up. But these two fur-babies, Pinky and Fiona, can make me double over in laughter just from a silly expression. Most of the time, they crack me up.

5.       Exercise
There are several types of exercises associated with Fiona and Pinky. Generally, there’s a daily walk for Pinky. Fiona doesn’t obey anyone so I have to go chasing her around the house or the backyard if I want to find her. There’s also exercise obtained by cleaning up the mistakes. As inside dogs, they get confused about optimal places for doing their duty. I think all this confusion adds a couple of years to my life. Which is a good thing, right? Sometimes I dream of being that sedentary writer who can focus on her manuscript instead of the aroma coming from the hallway.

6.       The Economy
Indisputable proof:
See the big heart?
With pets, it’s hard to save money but spending it helps the local economy. Not only is there some sort of foreign collusion in the dog-toy business but the kind-hearted vets dish it out with a smile. Plus there’s that city license, puppy pads, snacks, leashes, sweaters etc. When a Chihuahua can chew through a fifteen-dollar toy in one day, you know there’s something wrong with this world. Recently, Fiona had a bout of stomach flu and we took her to the Emergency Pet Hospital. Six hundred dollars later, they sent us home with a fancy X-ray and said she’d be fine. I’m proud to say, both dogs are a boost to U.S. capitalism and sadly, cheaper toys are not an option.

7.       Listening
One major problem with the world is listening. Almost everyone has an opinion. Even the nicest folks go around telling other people what they think without listening to their friends. There are enough people in the world to trade in friends for new ones if they don’t agree. It’s like people who dump their dogs at the animal shelter when they move.  I have high school and college friends who have left me behind for new friends because I may not have immediately rushed to agree with their political viewpoints. Makes me sad but at least Pinky listens to everything I say. Fiona may not always listen to me but she hears me. Her ears move like antenna trying to find meaning in my words that her tiny little mind cannot process but her heart tells her to keep still and keep listening because her mommy loves her very much.

8.       Foot Warmers
There’s nothing better than reading a book and having two very cute friends keeping your toes warm. The downside is that they too are relaxed—leading to not-so-adorable emanations--commonly referred to as Chihuahua farts.

9.       Crumb Catchers
Forget the vacuum. I have built in little sniffers who find every fallen morsel.

10.   Love
There are few places in the world to find unconditional love, that’s why I recommend the Animal Shelter. Both of our pups were rescues and every once in a while, with tails wagging, they come and place a paw on my chest, and look me straight in the eye. That’s when I feel the overwhelming thank you and the love. Of course, it might also mean, give us a snack or we’ll piss in your bathroom, but honestly, I feel the gratefulness.

Understandably, those clever videos with the smart dogs make my dogs look like dummies, but these two cuties have underappreciated talents and are sweet enough for me.

Do you have super intelligent dogs or lovable dogs like mine?

The Scandalous Fiona

Down South in sunny California
Lives a princess with oodles of attitude,
part Chihuahua, part muse, her name: Fiona.
It’s absolutely no secret she prefers going nude.
Forget the fancy collars the frou-frou clothes
disgusted by training snacks, expensive toys.
Cute as a fawn from head to her toes,
Her ears take in every single noise.
To top it off she’s rather stuck up--
Ceremoniously carry her downstairs ala palanquin,
Unlike most dogs, hardly a pup,
Cuddle too hard, she bursts into fits.
Too many kisses make her want to flee.
Upon hand-embroidered European pillows she sits,
Like a Monarch with a pedigree--

Until it’s time to pee.

S is for See Something Funny!

See no evil,
Hear no evil,
Speak no evil--
Found this at an antique shop in Twenty-nine Palms, CA

and for Heaven's sake--don't do that!

N is for Naughty

A bright sunny day is making Fiona squint like Clint.
Famous stars and actresses become the ‘face’ of Lancôme or Revlon cosmetics. Here we have the ‘face’ of naughtiness. Plain and simple—this is it—in case you wondered—and now you know.

F is for Fiona

Feisty Fiona!

There are other words beginning with the same letter that might describe my adorable dog that draws blood on a regular basis but I’ll just go with the name she had when we rescued her.

This morning for example, I was wiping sleep from her eyes and chomp.

Since I love her and want to keep her, does that mean we both have issues?

49 Shades of Gray

What do you think of when you hear about shades of gray?

Will the color gray always remind us
 of the famous, erotic book?

Is that called conditioning? Branding? Being brainwashed?
Even though I haven't read it,
the sound of that title distracts me
from years of newsprint memories,
smudged sleeves  and
discussions about ink saturation percentages.
Late night press room dilemmas, deadline dramas
and a limited spectrum, all based on black  and white.

(News photos were not printed in color until the late 80's.)

Right before a storm, this is my idea of at least 49 shades.

Frozen Sisters Wish You a Happy New Year!

Three blogging buddies inspired me to write this post. Plus, I just finished reading Jack London’s book White Fang. What a marvelous book--White Fang moved from the snow in the North to California where he wasn't used to being warm.(See previous post for my review) My rescued dogs Pinky and Fiona moved with us from the California desert and though we only  moved one hour away, they are both wondering what happened.

Anyway, if you like dogs you'll love these blogs:
The first one: Two Fur-Peeps and A Writer-is a blog about author Shelly Arkon and her two adorable pups, Sir Poops A-lot and Hairball. It’s a wonderful, happy blog.
Fiona catching rays
outside and trying to sleep!
The second one: Two Little Square Black Dogs is where you can visit Hamish and Watson in the Sonoran desert.
Lastly, there’s the informative and funny, Pets and other Critters also about dogs, birds and turtles.

(I don't know how to add audio to blogs and someday I'll figure it out. Until then you'll have to use your imagination.)

 Here's a story about
 Christmas Eve Morning

“Mommy, Pinky ate all my kibble.” Fiona looked at me, tilted her little head and blinked.

“Yes, I know,” I replied. “I’ll give you a snack later. Her whiskers sparkled under the Christmas lights and though she had been a naughty little Chihuahua all year long, she still deserved to eat.

Pinky ran up wagging her tail. “I heard you complaining, you little snitch. What do you expect after crapping on the sofa, you moron?”

Fiona yawned.

“Mommy, let me explain,” Pinky said while wagging her tail. “I’m bigger, I need more food and she’s stupid.” Pinky put her paws on my lap and stared at me with her doe-like eyes.
“How about you go into the garage while I give Fiona some more food?” I tried to pick up Pinky who immediately snapped at my fingers. “I thought Fiona was the naughty one? What’s with you wanting to bite me?”

Daddy put down the newspaper and looked across the room. “Are you okay? If she hurts you then she’s going back to that same rescue facility she came from."

He stood up and put Pinky on a leash and pulled her into the garage while I refilled Fiona’s bowl.

When I sat down to drink my coffee I watched Fiona staring at the garage door. “Is she in solitary confinement?”

“No,” I mumbled. “She’ll be back soon.” (This is where you play the song, "Love is an Open Door" from the Frozen soundtrack.)

Fiona kept staring at the garage door and wouldn't eat. She looked sad and missed her sister. After I finished my coffee, I stood up and let Pinky back into the house. Minutes later Pinky finished off the food in Fiona’s bowl.

“Thanks mommy,” she said after scarfing it down.

Fiona yawned.

Music:
(Let it go... Let it go....)

New Year's Eve we had a freak storm over our house which dumped several inches of snow all over everything. It's just not melting fast enough for Pinky and Fiona. Here they are checking out their first snow.

Music:Do you Want to Build a Snowman?

Yes, even Fiona wants to wish you a bright and sunny
New Year and all of us hope your dreams come true!
