J is for Just

Is it foolish to defend a word?

I keep seeing articles about how the word just is nonsense and we shouldn't use it when writing.
What about....

Just a minute...?
Just because...?
Just between you and me...?
Just the two of us...?
Just for Men?
Just  you wait, Henry Higgins, just you wait?
Just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down...?
and

“Girls Just Wanna Have Fun!”
or for those of you watching and following The Voice:

Christina Aguilera & Blake Shelton
 Just A Fool

Just keep those home fires burning!
Some people are taking this word
straight to the bank!

  1. I get so tired of hearing about what words we shouldn't be using. There was a time that list was limited to profanity. Now, you can never be so sure. If the word feels right to you, use it!

  2. For some odd reason, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun intruded on my dreams last night- but it was a feature length film directed by Cyndi Lauper, not just a video.

I really shouldn't have eaten that pizza.

  3. Christina has a phenomenal voice! It's hard to believe she was once n the level of Brittney Spears. Just saying.

  7. Just is one of those words I overuse a lot. Now you gave me an excuse to do so!

  8. I kind of like the word "just". I hope writers don't stop using it :)

thanks for visiting my blog; I used to live in Murrieta California, hop and skip from Temecula (but I don't remember what the newspaper was called there; we got it for a bit). We lived there for just about 3 years May 2008 to January 2011.

  9. I write for kids and words like just, really, and very give the story that childlike tone. Writers in this age group also use the word super a lot...mostly because kids today wear that word out!

  10. Yeah, they say never use just in writing, but sometimes it can't be helped.

I lived in Escondido for twenty five years. I know right where you are and have been to Temecula a few times.

  11. There are lots of words I use too much, and some that could do with being cropped most of the time. But sometimes they really matter.

  12. Every time I turn around, there's a new don't use list of words. I say we write from our hearts, and if 'just' is part of that, well then, that's just the way it is.
